Did you know that parents may exhibit lifelong stress symptoms from having a baby in the NICU?

The technologically-intense, high stakes environment of the NICU can be stressful for parents and families.

Research has suggested that NICU parents may experience an acute stress disorder that parallels post-traumatic stress disorder and is seen in behaviors and reactions such as avoidance, denial, grief, hopelessness or depression.

NICU nurses and staff are in a strategic position to assist parents and families coping with the potentially overwhelming hospitalization experience. Journaling offers a means to encourage safe reflection on and reconciliation of the NICU hospitalization experience.

Join us and learn how you can change the life of a family through journaling.

Our Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify three sources of stress for NICU parents and families
  2. List three potential benefits from journaling for NICU parents and families
  3. Describe three journaling methods that can be utilized by NICU parents and families

Our Presenter:

Annette Carley NNP PNP has been an advanced practice nurse for over twenty-five years at several NICU’s in Northern California.

She is currently a Clinical Professor at UCSF School of Nursing and Clinical Coordinator of the Neonatal NP program
